One of the more radical departures from of the off the shelf commodity data centers built on Intel is the Quanta SQ-2. Based on the Tilera chip, it has multiple cores (many more than an equivalent Intel Architecture) and uses a mesh network on chip to speed communications between the cores. It’s been a long, low, slow slog to get Tilera to market in any product other than a network switch or comm switch of any sort.
