Any person who does computer support avoids certain ‘technologies’ like the plague. Usually fear is the single biggest reason why. Commandlines, shell scripting, programming are all things some people avoid because they never learned it or come from an unrelated background (like the Humanities). While they are functional outside of those areas (Hey I can find a control panel and click check boxes!) the brute force tasks they are asked to do can sometimes be made to vanish, evaporate by the use of the almightly lever of Data Hand Tools. I’ve experienced the absolute incredible speed up a once slow, aggravating, tedious task of formatting or cutting things up to do web log analysis, but I discovered a few utilities in Unix and went to town.
